Cathe Friedrich's STS Shock Cardio: MMA Kickbox DVD Review

Cathe Friedrich's STS Shock Cardio: MMA Kickbox DVD

I was very disappointed in this workout, having expected something much more intense. I'm an advanced exerciser and expected so much more from Cathe. The description on the back of this DVD: "MMA: Kickbox is a 53-minute high intensity workout that will blast fat, build stamina, increase flexibility and muscle endurance." For me, this workout did none of those things.

I would rate this workout as a very low intermediate, or even an advanced beginner. To try and make this workout more intense, I used 1 1/2 pound weighted gloves and did jumping jacks while Cathe was shuffling side to side. My heart rate didn't even get into the low end of my aerobic zone!

What I liked about this workout:

**Mark, one of the background exercisers, made some funny faces during the routine. He looks as though he's really trying hard not to mess up and it's cute to watch.

**the core exercises at the end. They are a nice switch from endless crunches or planks. They had more of a Pilates feel to them.

What was neutral for me:

**the music. It wasn't annoying nor was it particularly motivating. It was just in the background so I didn't really notice it.

What I didn't like:
(Please note that my comments are from the perspective of an advanced exerciser. Most of these issues could be considered good points for a beginner or intermediate exerciser).

**Cathe is rather subdued. The energy just wasn't there, both because of Cathe's attitude and the music.I thought Cathe's cuing was okay. I pick up routines pretty easily, plus I'm used to Cathe's moves, so I don't notice if she doesn't cue as well as she used to.

**the LONG warm-up. I don't think a 10 minute warm-up is needed for a 30 minute low intensity workout.

**the LONG pauses between each punching drill. Cathe kept saying something to the effect of, "wow, I'm sure you're tired from that last drill, so let's just shuffle a bit." I did jumping jacks to try and keep my heart rate up, but even that didn't work for me.

**the lack of cool down. For the low intensity of this workout, a cool down wasn't really needed. But, for a beginner or intermediate exerciser, I think a cool down is warranted. She could have cut 2 minutes from the warm-up and used this time for a cool down.

**one of the core moves really tweaked my back. You do a bridge pose and then bring your fist up and over your body to rest it on the other side. Cathe does encourage you to do the prior move if something doesn't feel right, so that's what I did.

I was disappointed that this workout didn't meet my expectations. I would have been more forgiving if Cathe had billed the STS Shock Cardio series as workouts of varying intensity.Instead, they were billed as intense, advanced workouts.

I'll use this workout as an easy cardio warm-up before weight work, or as a second workout of a day. So, I don't feel like I've wasted my money. I'm glad that I purchased this at the pre-sale price and didn't pay full price for it.

I have Cathe's Kick Punch and Crunch DVD and I really enjoy it , so I thought I would try one of her new Shock DVD. I really enjoy this DVD a lot. As with most of her DVD's it is a more advanced workout, but it is really fun and the time flies. It has three punching combos that are each followed by an intense but short cardio burst. The combos are fairly easy to pick up if you have some kickboxing experience. It ends with a challenging core workout and a nice stretch. I also enjoy the heavy bag workout, it is only 20 minutes or so but it will definitely make you sweat! I highly recommend this workout if you enjoy a good punching workout !!

POWERSTRIKE 4 DVD with Ilaria Montagnani Review

POWERSTRIKE 4 DVD with Ilaria Montagnani

This dvd is amazing, I've never done a workout that was so much fun before. I love how fast the hour goes by. The instructor is great and gives all the right reminders. I'll admit though, this isn't for people who've never exercised before. It's super hard, but worth it. I've already noticed a difference in my endurance after doing this dvd only five times in the past two weeks. Also there is some great instruction before the workout even starts on how to punch and kick correctly in all the different forms she uses in the workout. I don't think there could be a better kickboxing dvd out there.

Kelly Coffey-Meyer's 30-Minutes to Fitness Kickboxing DVD Review

Kelly Coffey-Meyer's 30-Minutes to Fitness Kickboxing DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kelly's 30 Minutes format is a winner. In all the workouts she has made in her 30 Minute series, she includes two main 30 minute workouts, the option to do both 30 minute workuts back to back, as a long and tough one hour workout, bonus material and many versatile premixes.

Both kickbox workouts on this DVD have short routines or drills that you do for a couple of minutes before moving on to the next. So nothing seems repeated for too long. Coupled with the superb music, time flies. The kickbox choreo is fresh and not tricky (particularly if you do the tutorial) and a whole lot of fun. The intensity is great for high intermediate to advanced exercisers but without being "test the very boundaries of your limits" tough.

I find that too-fast kickbox workouts do not allow an emphasis on form and end up becoming hi/lo. The uniqueness of kickboxing for cardio in my opinion should be from throwing punches with the rotational force of the whole upper body and kicking from the power of a lunge or squat. When the pace is too fast there isnt enough time for the whole range of motion of a "real" punch or kick. The pacing in this workout is perfect.

The bonus kick -box themed abs/obliques work on this DVD is my current favorite abs/waist routine. Kelly is at her creative best.
